Homecoming

Whats the deal with dances? No, what is the deal with asking to dances? These clever little puns or puzzles that everyone is thinking up. I wonder why that became necessary, more than necessary actually it is required. If you dont ask creatively than you have everyone and their dog down your throat giving you grief. I don't see a problem with the traditional telephone call, isn't it enough to just ask? Or is there something special in these clever ways that makes a yes more probable?
Honestly i dont think it would matter one fig the way you asked as much as it would matter who you asked. Some one who doesn't want to go with you would still turn you down if you asked cleverly just as she would if you asked traditionally. So what i want to know is: Where did this come from? And what keeps it going?
As far as where it came from there are endless possibilities. One of which would be a certain individual conconcting the idea and putting it to use. Following his application other less prominent individuals would follow suit based on the fact that one, it worked; and two, it sounded cool. Seeing as those are two of the most convincing reasons for teens to do anything.
Another theory could be in our history. Maybe this all came from a long time ago when our ancestors and dinosaurs roamed the earth. I would bet that if you searched enough you could find some ancient story of someone asking someone else to something in a way that is similiar to how people do today. Like those stories of Medieval times when knights would send notes to their captive lovers by way of a dove or by climbing up to their window. I would bet that it was common among such knights to make a competition out of it, to see who could be the most daring and spontaneous with their messages relay. After all, what better to boast then the best way of relaying a message?
Well i guess that about exhausts the possible options on where it all came from, but as far as what keeps it going their is only one answer: male pride. Just like that knights of "back then" guys today can't stand it when someone bests them in anything. Especially in relation to females. So for each dance it starts with one, then another attempts to better it and then another and so on and so on until all options are exhausted and most everyone has asked. And whats funny is that although they all think they were more clever and unique than the last they were really all basically the same thing; a cheesy pun, a ridiculous puzzle or a combination. Now the real maverick would blow everyones mind by going against the grain. just give her a call, and if you really have to do the cheesy pun you can say it over the line, if you must have the puzzle you can call from collect and make them guess who you are but that is the truly unique way to ask.
Anyways it is obvious to tell that i am not a big fan of the elaborate "asking to dances" that goes on nowadays. Why should we complicate something merely for the fun of it? It doesnt make a difference in the response and it doesnt make a difference at all. Traditional is the way to go.
